June 30th We Will Be Turning Off Our Red Light Permanently

To our Wonderful Customers, Vendors, and Pearl Associates,

Seven years ago, I started The Sporting District with the singular goal of bringing the very best of American made and more specifically, Southern made, men's clothing, apothecary, and accoutrements for the modern gentleman.  As many of you know, this passion project came to me in an instant with the opportunity to lease space in San Antonio's premier lifestyle destination The Pearl became available.  In four exceedingly quick months we went from concept to grand opening party, an event for which we still receive accolades from our earliest customers.  We wanted to set the bar high for both our customer's expectations and our performance standards.

A special "thank you" to the amazing marketing team of Creative Knoggin for the industry leading branding they created for us at breakneck speed.  And I think we have met those expectations and standards throughout our existence.  Early on we were named by Garden and Gun magazine as one of the top 5 men's stores in the South, with scores of other awards and recognitions throughout the years.  But, without question, our proudest success has been the lifelong relationships we have cultivated with our loyal customers and vendors.  In raising our city's sartorial style, we have elevated our own sense of belonging in our hometown.  Precious few things in life exceed that accomplishment and we are adamantly grateful to each of you for making our journey such a rewarding one.

So, why this open letter at this time?  The Sporting District has come to the end of our extended lease at the Pearl and, with so much uncertainty in the brick-and-mortar space, and the long-term impact of the COVID Pandemic will have on retail buying behaviors, we have made the decision to close The Sporting District at the end of June.  It was by no means an easy decision; we love what we do and what we've done and who we do it for, but having fulfilled our mission of provisioning San Antonio's gentlemen for their manly pursuits for seven years now, the time has come to close this chapter and open a new one.

So, it is with much pride and longing regret that we share with you this news.  We have a robust inventory of all the great clothing, gifts, and accessories you have come to expect from us, and how less than 30 days to sell them.  We eagerly invite you to shop with us one last time and enjoy steeply reduced pricing on everything in stock.  Be sure to ask about pricing on many of our hallmark furnishings and fixtures as well.  And if you were fortunate enough to have received a gift card from our store, please be certain to redeem it prior to our closing on June 30th.

Lastly, The Sporting District would not be The Sporting District without the unwavering loyalty, unfaltering hospitality, and unrivaled service of our staff.  I am particularly grateful to Daniel and Caroline who have been such an integral part of our success since the very beginning in their managerial roles.  Their untiring dedication to ensuring that our customers experienced "The Finer Life" with each visit made The Sporting District the destination we all looked forward to visiting.  I will remain extremely grateful for their support and friendship.

So, saunter forth, San Antonio, with glasses raised high to celebrate the seven years of our place in your hearts.  And be certain to extend that loyalty to each of the great local retailers you come upon, including our great neighbors The Tiny Finch, Local Coffee, Dos Carolina's and all the other great shops at the Pearl.

With Sincere Gratitude,

Sean McNelis
